Erik Befrits – Nicotine Science and Media Update December 5th 2014

I posted a few months ago about e-cigarettes being a trojan horse to encourage new people into the heady world of nicotine addiction in this post.. There was resistance to this idea from the tobacco industry who market vaping as a safe alternative to smoking. However there is now evidence that e cigarettes are indeed bringing new smokers into the arena. Evidence in this study suggests that new young smokers are being enticed into addiction by using e-cigarettes.

The tobacco use report presents key findings from the New Zealand Health Survey 2012/13 about tobacco use. It provides a snapshot of tobacco use by adults over the age of 15 years, across different population groups (age, sex, ethnicity and neighbourhood deprivation). It presents information on when smokers smoked their first cigarette and how this has changed over time.

On base tobacco product prices will likely increase thanks to a measure in the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act that is expected to be approved by Congress before Christmas. Currently, tobacco on base is priced at no less than 5 percent below the lowest price off base, according to military policy. However, that policy seems to be often ignored by many bases, according to a study released earlier this year, and prices on base are often much lower.

The government has been urged to put on hold the proposed regulatory measures on use of tobacco and areca nut and sale of loose cigarettes […] Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday told reporters that tobacco and areca nut growers of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had approached the government to not to go ahead with a ban on the use of the two products.

A team of researchers working at Yale University has found that quitting drinking may be made harder if people continue to smoke cigarettes during recovery. In their paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team describes their study that relied on both human volunteers and monkeys. It’s no secret that many alcoholics are also smokers—the two vices seem to go hand in hand.

A public consultation on imposing tougher tobacco sale restrictions has been launched by the Department of Health. They include the introduction of a licensing system for tobacco products and non-medicinal nicotine delivery systems, including e-cigarettes. It is proposed to ban the sale of tobacco products from self-service vending machines and mobile units or containers.
